An innovative wind turbine that spins in a spherical formation was recently released by Swedish company, Home Energy. Replacing conventional blades for a modern orb structure, this beautiful piece of engineering makes use of the Venturi principle, where it funnels and intensifies wind within the turbine’s blades.
Better known as the Energy Ball V100, this spherical wind turbine has better efficiency and lower noise levels, which makes it perfect for residential wind power.
This is a video of their prototype built in 2007:
While most of today’s wind turbines have three blades, the tips of which can reach speeds six times faster than the wind, the Energy Ball is designed to utilize the Venturi effect to channel wind through its six blades and around its motor. This results in an extremely efficient wind turbine able to operate in very low wind speeds.
Here are some stats from the Home Energy website:

While some have argued the revolutionary design breaks the laws of physics, with a volume of only one cubic meter and weight of 30 kilograms, the silent Energy Ball can produce up to 500 kWh of power per year in average wind speeds of just over 13 mph. And we believe Home Energy – that specializes in producing small-scale energy systems for homes, communities and businesses – has once again done a good job in designing efficient residential wind power.

Looks pretty cool and impressive.
Yes. But like most commercial renewable energy solutions, the current price tag is way too high for the average household to use the energy ball.
